Lost in Formation (Film)

Is an accentuated head movement an unconscious byplay or a dramatic broadcast with a challenging effect? Does a twitch in the foot, the turn of the hand, the raising of the gaze signal interested complacency or is something being communicated? The short film draws attention to those easily overlooked details of non-verbal communication from which entire choreographies are created in everyday life. Choreographer unknown.

In 2019, the production of the dance piece „Lost in Formation“ was an exploratory journey into the world of choreographically active groups and the images they create. Online it was possible to follow how customs of recreational practice, parades, processions and demonstrations find interesting and curious body language formulations that become ritual. Even the military sector, which does not wage war but makes shows, produces stylistic blossoms of exalted performance. Inspiration for a production with an interest in dance beyond designated dance stages.

In 2022/23, the short film meticulously follows the interest in performative articulation. The film uses recordings from the filming, the rehearsals and the performances of the dance piece, free of any concern for spatial or temporal continuity. What interests the film is repetition as an action that creates reality.
